Rising Solar-Panel Generation Means Increasing Industrial Demand For Silver
The sun is adding some shine to the silver market.
One of the growing industrial uses for silver is photovoltaic cells in solar panels as the world seeks alternative forms of energy, metal consultancies said. There has been a jump in such demand in recent years, and analysts said millions more ounces of silver may be consumed for this over the next decade.
“Solar panels will probably be one of the leading industrial uses,” said Jessica Cross, CEO of VM Group.
Use of the long-established photovoltaic technology, referred to as PV, “really took” off in the last half decade, helped by government subsidies, said Philip Newman, research director for GFMS.
“The growth in demand did not primarily come about because of technological developments,” he said. “It came about because of changing attitudes of governments and government policy.”
Ultimately, the amount of silver used will hinge on growth that emerges in the PV solar market. This will depend on both future government support, as well as technology innovations that bring down the cost of solar power, said Erica Rannestad, commodities analyst with CPM Group. As it is, the cost for a typical PV module fell by around 40% in 2009 from mid-2008, she said, citing data from the trade group Solar Energy Industries Association.
One of the most popular government programs is a “feed-in tariff” mechanism in which electrical-grid operators pay producers of renewable energy long-term fixed prices for energy they feed into the grid. This originated in Germany and is especially popular in Europe, Rannestad said.
Any government policies calling for more renewable energy are likely to boost demand for solar cells. Europe is pushing for renewable energy to amount to 20% of total energy consumption by 2020, compared to around 10% in 2008, Rannestad said. “I expect new installations of solar panels to continue to rise on an annual basis,” she said.
Globally, solar-panel installations during 2009 meant 7.2 gigawatts of new electrical capacity, Rannestad said. (A gigawatt equals 1 billion watts.) Industry estimates suggest newly installed capacity will more than double to 16.5 gigawatts in 2010, Rannestad said. This may rise to 23.3 gigawatts by 2013 and 40.9 gigawatts by 2019.

Port of Rotterdam to offer ‘once-only’ rebate on harbour dues
The Port of Rotterdam will offer a “once-only” 3% rebate on harbour dues for ocean-going ships and inland waterway vessels in 2011.
The move comes as a result of the 1% structural increase on sea and harbour due tariffs experienced in 2010, with the port authority stating that it intends to help shipping lines in “their further recovery from the crisis.”
The rebate comes after months of discussions, with Rotterdam port associationDeltalinqs, focused on outlining methods in which to aid the sector in its recovery from the financial crisis.
Revenues from sea and harbour dues for 2009 were recorded at $371 million.
“The port authority shows an open eye for the fact that the companies are still recovering from the enormous crisis and that the revenues are not yet at the old level,” said Deltalinqs chairman, Wim van Sluis.
At the announcement, CEO of Port of Rotterdam Authority Hans Smit said: “We had an agreement for two years, but after the consultation of the market, it is agreed to give extra support. The crisis rebate of last year is now followed by a recovery rebate to enable our customers to land as smooth as possible.”
Association of Rotterdam Shipbrokers and Agents chairman, Piet Hoogerwaard added: “This general recovery rebate offers our customers the possibility to retain the improved results or to limit losses. It also contributes to the consolidation of the improved market share of the port of Rotterdam.”
Port of Rotterdam COO resigns
The Port of Rotterdam has announced that chief operating officer, André Toet, will be leaving the Dutch hub “because the Supervisory Board indicated that it could not see Toet as the future CEO of the Port Authority.”

André Toet (Photo courtesy of Center for Maritime Economics and Logistics)
Toet, a former Maersk Line senior executive, will be leaving his position as COO of Europe’s largest port in January 2011.
Toet is responsible for successful cost control when it comes to the construction and maintenance of infrastructure at the port.
The port said that “the supervisory board and the two fellow executive board members — Hans Smits and chief financial officer Thessa Menssen — are very sorry about the announced departure of André Toet, but respect his reasons.”
Menssen will be taking over Toet’s role upon his departure, with the recruitment and selection procedure for the position of Menssen’s replacement having already been launched.
In a breakdown from the Port Authority, Rotterdam’s supervisory board had informed Toet about his future prospects shortly after the summer, upon which he decided to continue his career elsewhere.

Invest in Gold
For centuries gold has been the ultimate cushion against the dangers of stocks price falls, fluctuating rate changes, inflation, rising/falling real estate prices, natural calamities, wars and more. Gold has been the best way to safeguard your investments against unstable financial markets.

WHY IS GOLD SUCH A GOOD INVESTMENT?
Whether or not gold is a good investment, is a question that does not have a simple answer. Gold has appreciated substantially over the past couple of years. The growth rate of late has been much higher than the conventional rate of appreciation. However, if we look at the past 15-20 years record, it is seen that Gold is a hedge against inflation.
Over the last 20 years, the average return from Gold has been around 7%. So, if the past trend continues, one could expect around say 6-9% returns from gold in the long-term.
Also, another aspect that we should look at is a weakening currency. No matter which country you originate from, there is a chance that your country’s currency will suffer a downfall at a particular point of time.
Gold, on the other hand, retains its true value and can help you protect your riches because it does not rely on the state of the country’s economic, whether it is on the up or downtrend. Therefore, investing a small portion of one’s investment portfolio in gold would be a good idea.
HOW CAN ONE INVEST IN GOLD?
Gold can be bought in various forms and the decision should be based on the reason you need gold. If you see this purely as an investment, you can either buy it in the form of physical gold — bullions, bars, biscuits and or coins or even in a dematerialized form.
For most people, gold purchases usually mean buying jewellery. However, the disadvantage of buying gold in the form of jewellery is that its resale is not always a profitable proposition.
Here are some other ways of investing in gold:
GOLD ETFs
You can invest in gold by buying Gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). Being ETFs, these funds are listed and traded on the stock exchange i.e. investors can buy and sell them like any other stock on the stock exchange, on a real- time basis.
All you need is an account and/or a share trading account with a broker or sub-broker who deals in stocks. These are traded in units of one. That means you can buy one or more units at a time. Each unit represents approximately the market value of one gram of gold.
Gold ETFs are traded close to real-time gold prices in the market, that is, ETF prices move up and down with the market price of gold in the conventional marketplace. Your expenses in an ETF would be very low: you would pay securities transaction tax (STT), brokerage /service tax, and the like, which are unlikely to exceed around 1% of market price.
If you decide to sell your ETF units, you can do so through your stock broker or sub-broker and the charges would be the same as what you paid while buying the ETF. Thus an ETF is very convenient, and you need not worry about the purity of the gold, secure storage, insurance against theft, and so on.
But then again, not many like the hassle, right? The other option we recommend is doing the traditional route: Physical gold buying.
PHYSICAL GOLD
This is the traditional way to invest in gold. Investors can buy gold and then store it in a bank’s locker. In this way, you will be protecting yourself from rising gold prices, while also sparing yourself anxiety about the purity and safety of your gold. You can keep accumulating gold at a slow rate, perhaps even ten ounces at a time through us.
MJS Commodities assists private and companies in making this happen. We are able to sell you gold bullions at current market spot price, at minimum order of 10 ounces up to X amount of kg per week or month for proven cash buyers. For bigger orders, such as in metric tonnes, we sometimes entertain it if the client is a proven buyer. We request submission of profiles and interview as part of our protocol. We prefer knowing our clients in order for us to properly meet their needs.
It is evident that gold is an asset class that you can rarely go wrong with. Therefore, think seriously about investing in gold. MJS Commodities is right here to be at your side when you are ready.
Sugar Prospects
World consumption is expected to increase to 257 million tons raw value from 168 million b 2030, driven by rising demand in the developing world, with the overall sugar market almost doubling in that time.
F.O. Licht, the German-based analyst said about global sugar production: “The after effects of the financial crisis and nearly three years of low sugar prices between 2006 and 2009 could make their presence felt next year, as the replanting ratio in Brazil has fallen,” Licht added: “This could lead to a reduction of the volume of cane suitable for sugar production, which in combination with lower fertilizer use could lead to falling Brazilian sugar production next year, which would be for the first time in 11 years.” World beet sugar production will fall to 32.7 million tons in 2010/11, down nearly 1.3 million tons from last year’s 34.0 million as yields in the EU return to average from last year’s record levels, Licht said.
Brazil
Brazil’s main centre-south 2010-11 sugar output reached 27 million tons as of Sept. 30, the Sugarcane Industries Association, or Unica, said Thursday. Mills in Brazil produced 30.1% more sugar than the same period a year earlier in the centre-south region, which accounts for 90% of the country’s cane crop, the trade association said in a statement. Unica also said Brazil’s centre-south sugarcane region crushed 444.5 million tons as of Sept. 30, up 17.3% from the same period a year earlier. The association in August trimmed its annual crush estimate to 570 million tons for the full year from its estimate in March of 595 million tons as a result of damage caused by a prolonged drought from May through to August. The region’s total ethanol production reached 20.3 billion litres as of Sept.30, up 22.6% from the same time a year earlier. Industrial yields, known as ATRs, are at 142.1 kilograms per tonne of cane, up 7.4% at the same period last season, due to the long dry spell earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s sugar output for the 2010-2011 crop season is expected to reach 40.5 million tons, according to Stefan Uhlenbrock, a commodities analyst for consultancy F.O. Licht. He also said sugar production for this season should be on a par with last season, but there could be a fall in the 2011-2012 crop season in Brazil due to prolonged dry weather. He spoke to Dow Jones Newswires on the sidelines of a conference in Sao Paulo. The possible fall next year is unlikely to be drastic but will lead to a slight decrease in sugar output, he said. Ulenbrock said world sugar prices could test the 30 U.S. cents per pound mark against the Mar11 sugar contract on ICE in the near future. Datagro released a report today projecting Brazil’s 2010-2011 output at 34.3 million tons, and the main crush at 574.8 million tons. Ethanol output for 2010-2011 was pegged at 27.8 billion litres.
India may have 3 million surplus
The Director general of the Indian Sugar Mills Association told local press sources that the country could have up to 3 million tons of surplus sugar for exports in the current marketing year, thanks to a larger crop and carryover stocks. The quantity includes about 1 million tons that the government has agreed to allow for export to meet an old obligation against tax-free imports of raw sugar. He added that he expected sugar output to reach 25.5 million tons and that opening stocks would be 5.8 million tons.
Russia
Russia harvested 11.9 million tons of sugar beet to October 12 on 541 100 hectares, or 52.4% of the total area to be harvested, with an average yield of 22.07 tons a hectare, the national sugar producers’ association Soyuzrossakhar reported during the month, quoting information received from the Agriculture Ministry. The amount of beet harvested to date was 2.2 million tons less than on the same date last year and the average yield was 7.56 tons less than a year ago. Soyuzrossakhar has forecast the beet harvest this year at 26.8 million tons with an average yield of 25.9 tons a hectare, compared with 26 million tons and an average yield of 32 tons a hectare in 2009. Soyuzrossakhar said Russia was likely to produce between 3.0 million and 3.1 million tons of refined sugar from domestically harvested beet this year, compared with 3.2 million tons in 2009.
How to Track Fraudsters and Cyberbullies via E-mail
You receive an e-mail from a prospective customer – requesting information on your products, price etc. or placing order. Normally, you would like to find out more information about this customer before parting with requested information, especially if the information is of sensitive nature like price list, discount rate etc. There may be other occasions when you want to find out more information about e-mail sender – for example, to locate the identity of a spammer or someone whose identity is suspicious. How do you go about it?
I belong to a closed network of CEOs who share information with each other regarding international finance and trade deals worldwide and every month we share notes in our own blacklists as well as high level messages carrying “red flags”. Since I achingly encounter fraudsters (and lately some cyberbullies) on a weekly basis, I decided to write about one simple technique we do that I tell our employees worldwide in how we do business within MJS companies.
E-mail is perhaps the easiest thing to acquire in the Internet. Though Internet is anonymous – there are few tools with which you may dig out some information about your customer before entering into a negotiation. For example – if you receive an e-mail from a ‘customer’ with US postal address but discover that the e-mail has been sent from an African country – you´ll know what to do with the help of these steps.
Analysis of Given Details
Every e-mail has at least three distinct elements:
From: (e.g. abcd@whyme1234.com)
To: (e.g. seller@products.com)
Subject (e.g. Want to buy Your products)
The simplest test is to put the tail of sender’s e-mail address (e.g. www.whyme1234.com for abcd@whyme1234.com) in your browser’s window and check if there is a web-site at this URL. If you find a valid and business like web-site at this URL – your job becomes easier. One can dig out significant details from web-site as also other sources. Please see Faida article – ‘How to evaluate a business web-site’ for details. However, if you can not find e-mail sender’s web-site at URL – do not jump to conclusion that the sender is phony. Lot’s of people use business e-mail address without web-site. In such cases, you need to determine if this guy is one of them or is using an anonymous web-based free e-mail, disguised as business e-mail. Your next task is to find out ownership details of the domain name.
Tracing Owner of Domain Name
Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the nodal agency that supervises registration of domain names. Information on ownership of domain names can be located from ICANN approved registrars, who maintain public access database (called whois) on ownership of domain names. Please visit such a whois (e.g. http://www.internic.net/whois.html) and check ownership of domain name. If the sender is using a business e-mail – the domain name should be registered in sender’s or his/her company’s name.
When e-mail Sender Uses free web-based E-mail service
What happens when the e-mail sender uses a web-based free e-mail service (e.g. hotmail.com, yahoo.com, rediffmail.com etc.) ? Well, you can still find information about the sender by analyzing the e-mail header.
Unraveling Hidden information from e-mail header
Every e-mail has a visible set of information on sender (From:), recipient (To:), subject (Subject:), Organization of the sender (Orgn:) etc. However, there’s a great deal more hidden within, that can reveal significant information about the sender. A little scrutiny of this hidden information may help you locate sender’s country, genuineness of the e-mail used in ‘From:’ column, whether the sender tried to conceal his/her identity etc. A fake sender attempting to confuse identity usually means a fraudster trying to steal your money or a virus attack, a potential hazard in either case, that can cost you a lot in terms of financial loss, computer crash etc. A little time spent on analyzing suspicious looking e-mails is an insurance against such disasters. Those using Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail or any such web-based e-mail service may think that their true identity and location are hidden. In reality – one may still find information about them by analyzing their e-mail headers.
What is E-mail Header
The part of an e-mail where such hidden information is stored is called ‘header’. Header of an e-mail stores various information on the path it has traversed while reaching your mailbox – right from sender’s computer. Normally, one doesn’t need this kind of information and mail clients (Eudora, Outlook, Netscape etc. ) do not display it. To see e-mail header in Netscape, open any e-mail and click View > Page Source For Outlook, right-click on the mail message that is still in your Inbox, select ‘Options…’ from the resulting popup menu Examine the ‘Internet Headers’ in the ‘Message Options’ dialog At first look – the header may look confusing and puzzling. This is more so for spam e-mails as spammers try their best to make the header misleading. Do not lose heart – I am going to explain how to pick up right information from it.
Examining a Typical Header
Let us examine following e-mail header:
1. Delivery-date: Wed, 03 Nov 2004 23:59:47 -0600 2. Received: from bani by arjuna.banijya.com with local-bsmtp (Mann 4.43) 3. id 1CPaev-00057o-Q4 4. for abcdxyz@banijya.com; Wed, 03 Nov 2004 23:59:47 -0600 5. Received: from [203.199.83.28] (helo=rediffmail.com) 6. by arjuna.banijya.com with smtp (Mann 4.43) 7. id 1CPaev-00057f-8T 8. for info@infobanc.com; Wed, 03 Nov 2004 23:59:45 -0600 9. Received: (qmail 28471 invoked by uid 510); 4 Nov 2004 05:59:09 -0000 10. Date: 4 Nov 2004 05:59:09 -0000 11. Message-ID: <20041104055909.28468.qmail@webmail18.rediffmail.com> 12. Received: from unknown (61.3.251.11) by rediffmail.com 13. via HTTP; 04 nov 2004 05:59:08 -0000 14. MIME-Version: 1.0 15. From: “Raj International ” 16. Reply-To: “Raj International “ 17. To: “InfoBanc” 18. Subject: Thanks for activation
Explanation of Header Elements
If you look carefully at e-mail header above, a pattern is clearly visible. The header is composed of several lines of text – each starting with header name (e.g. Delivery-date) , a colon (:), a space and finally header value. If a line starts with a tab or spaces (line nos. 2-4 and 5-8) – that line is a continuation of the previous header value line. So, the header name ‘Received:’ in line 2 has a header value that spans lines 2 to 4. Some of the header names are simple and self-explanatory, such as the ‘Delivery-date:’, ‘From:’, ‘Reply-To:, ‘Subject:’ etc. For example, sender’s e-mail address appears after header name ‘From:’ and the recipients e-mail address appears after the ‘To:’ header name. Please note – mail servers have no way to check if the sender is using his or her own e-mail address. This lack of verification is a weakness – that spammers and fraudsters use ruthlessly to confuse recipients. So, do not accept sender’s e-mail address at face value. A fraudster or spammer, in all likelihood, will never use his/her actual e-mail address. Instead, he/she may use a legitimate e-mail address (it could even be your own e-mail) as sender. We shall not discuss each and every header name – as many of these can be forged or a fake one inserted by spammer. What is most important for our purpose (and most difficult to forge) is the ‘Received:’ headers. Analysis of ‘Received:’ header names can reveal a great deal of information about the sender.
Locating Actual Sender from Header Analysis
Every e-mail has a header that stores significant information about sender of the e-mail and the path it traversed before reaching your mailbox. In earlier issues – we have discussed how to read e-mail headers and various header elements. In this issue, we shall discuss how to locate actual sender of an e-mail and his/her geographical location. Considering anonymous nature of Internet – this a vital piece of information for every e-business. If you receive an e-mail from a ‘customer’ with US postal address but discover that the e-mail has been sent from an African country – you know what to do ! Users of web-based free e-mail services like Yahoo, Rediffmail, Hotmail etc. may think that their true identity and location are hidden. In reality – one may still find information about them by analyzing their e-mail headers.
‘Received:’ Headers
Of all header elements we have discussed, ‘Received:’ headers are most important for identifying sender’s country. One reason is that – ‘Received:’ headers are most difficult to tamper with. Any header element can be forged and faked ones inserted up to a point, as the headers are just textual data, and only the headers added by servers that you trust can be considered reliable. Every time an e-mail moves through a new mail server, a new Received header line (and possibly other header lines) is added to the beginning of the headers list. This means that as you read the Received headers from top to bottom, you are gradually moving closer to the computer/person that sent you the e-mail. But please note that as you read through the Received header fields and get closer to the computer/person that sent you the e-mail, you need to consider the possibility that the sender added one or more false Received header lines to the list (at the time, the senders beginning of the list) in an attempt to redirect you to another location and prevent you from finding the true sender. But, now that you know false header lines are possible, just stay alert.
Reading ‘Received:’ Header
Consider following e-mail header and its interpretation:
1. Received: from [216.136.225.35] (helo=web20024.mail.yahoo.com) 2. by arjuna.banijya.com with smtp (Mann 4.43) 3. id 1CPhNE-0002Qt-0T 4. for info@infobanc.com; Thu, 04 Nov 2004 07:09:56 -0600 5. Received: from [69.132.4.255] by web20024.mail.yahoo.com via 6. HTTP; Thu, 04 Nov 2004 05:09:53 PST
Interpretation
Line 1 – 4 : Mail sever arjuna.banijya.com receives a mail for one of its clients (info@infobanc.com) from mail server web20024.mail.yahoo.com which has an IP address 216.136.225.35
Line 5 – 6 : Mail server web20024.mail.yahoo.com receives a mail from IP 69.132.4.255
By the way – IP stands for Internet Protocol. The Internet uses a technology to interlink millions of computers in its fold – TCP/IP. The core of this technology is called IP addressing or Internet Protocol addressing. Every computer connected to Internet is given a unique number for identification – called IP number. IP number is used to verify location and activities of any computer. Your ISP provider assigns you an IP address each time you connect to the Internet. It is evident from header interpretation that actual sender is the one at the bottom of series of ‘Received:’ headers and the recipient is at the top. In other words, mail server web20024.mail.yahoo.com received an e-mail from IP address 69.132.4.255. So IP address 69.132.4.255 is the sender of this e-mail. Interestingly, this sender used a free web-based e-mail service (yahoo.com) to send this e-mail – still his/her identity can be traced using IP address 69.132.4.255 found in mail header.
Locating Sender’s Country from IP Address
Spammers and fraudsters may forge many header elements like ‘From:’, ‘Received-date:’ etc. – but it is very difficult to change IP addresses inserted by mail servers. At best, they may insert fake ‘Received’: headers to confuse recipient.
Once you locate IP address of actual sender’s mail server or computer, it is possible to locate geographical location or country.
E-mails are anonymous by nature – but contains significant information in its header about the path it traversed before reaching your mailbox. The header is normally not visible. We have discussed how to view and analyze header of any e-mail and locate actual sender with his/her IP address. In this issue – we shall discuss how to locate sender’s country from IP address.
Internet Resources for IP Analysis
There are various free and paid-for Internet resources to help you find information about IP addresses, domain names etc.
1. VisualWare
Perhaps the leader in IP tracking software, Visualware has number of products to track e-mail, IP, domain name owner etc. VisualRoute and eMailTrackerPro are two software from Visualroute that can help you significant information on e-mails. VisualRoute has a free service to demonstrate how the software works. If your IP tracking requirement is modest – you may use this free service to track any IP address. However, if you wish to use this facility regularly – please consider buying the software. To use the free service – please visit Visualware web-site http://www.visualware.com/index.html

High-Yield Investment Program Fraud (Trade Programs)
A ruinous scheme in which con artists lure unsuspecting investors into believing that their funds can be used to purchase securities (PRIME BANK GUARANTEES, DEBENTURES, TREASURIES, PROMISSORY NOTES, LETTERS OF CREDIT) at enormous DISCOUNT and sell them for equally enormous profits, typically during a forty-week turnaround.
ARBITRAGE, the purchase of FRESH-CUT SECURITIES from a CUTTING HOUSE which are then sold to the SECONDARY MARKET, FORFAITING, DISCOUNT HOUSES or DISCOUNT BANKS, SELF-LIQUIDATING LOANS, or a combination of all of these terms incorrectly used with wild abandon.
The financial instruments are always issued from a TOP WORLD BANK or PRIME BANK, and a great deal of secrecy is always paramount.
New twists are sometimes heard, but the basic system is always the same –
- LETTERS OF CREDIT, PRIME BANK NOTES or PRIME BANK GUARANTEES, DEBENTURES, SAFEKEEPING RECEIPT, or other financial instruments are created against the CONDITIONAL SWIFT transfer of investor funds
- The financial instruments are then “sold on the SECONDARY MARKET” which the swindlers call a trade.
- A portion of the profits from the secondary market sale goes to the investor, and the balance is set aside to purchase more financial instruments.
- The whole thing starts over again because there are “X” number of trades per week, month, day… and profits are “enormous”- ranging from 500% to 1700% per year, per month, per whatever.
There are other scenarios touting involvement in INFRASTRUCTURE LOANS supposedly guaranteed by the WORLD BANK, the INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND, Swiss Banks, PARALLEL ACCOUNTS, FOREIGN CURRENCY EXCHANGE (FOREX), STANDBY LETTERS OF CREDIT (SBLC), and accounts over which the investor supposedly has sole control.
In every case funds disappear, which usually involves MONEY LAUNDERING. So what happens to your money?
It goes toward paying new investors PONZI-fashion; it goes into travel, scam expenses, yachts, entertaining, jewelry, more scam expenses, houses, bribes, Mercedes-Benzes, gambling, and accounts stashed away in various countries in SHELL ACCOUNTS.
The way in which securities are used in no way allows for the kinds of profits described by these fraudsters; however, because fraudsters use half-truths and because it is difficult for you to understand the actual uses of some securities and international finance procedures, fraudsters are able to excite your imagination beyond and away from the boundaries of your normal investment precautions.
